In the northern Sichuan, close to the border of Northwest China's Gansu Province, Jiuzhaigou is a breathtaking alpine valley discovered by lumberjacks in the 1970s. It now welcomes an annual influx of nearly one million tourists from home and abroad, and the prosperous tourist industry now accounts for a large proportion of local revenue.
Located in Nanping County, Aba Tibetan-Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Jiuzhaigou Ravine stretches 80 kilometers in one direction and takes up an area of more than 60,000 hectares. With its large number of lake groups, waterfalls and rich variety of endangered plants and fauna, Jiuzhaigou was awarded the status of UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve in 1997 and was also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. The reserve has received a string of other titles including that of a National Geological Park, an AAAA Class Scenic Spot in China and a Green Globe 21.
Jiuzhaigou, also called "Yangtong" in ancient times, currently has other names like "Heyao Jiuzhai", and the ¡°Jade Sea ". Jiuzhaigou literally means nine Tibetan village gullies, which are all scattered in the scenic area. The names of the villages are Heye, Shuzheng, Zechawa, Heijiao, Panya, Yala, Jianpan, Rexi and Guodu. The area of Jiuzhaigou as well as the upper reaches of the Jialing River and Minjiang River is called the land of Shiqiang (Qiang ethnic minority) in ancient times, where human activities have been recorded dating back as early as to the Yin-Shang Period (16th-11th Century BC). According to the Records of Songpan (vol. I - Rivers and Mountains), the "Jade Sea is 50-odd kilometers to the northeast county, within the territory of Zhongyang Tongfan Tribe. Its valleys are as long as several kilometers with green water and jade-like ripples." This evidences that the Jade Sea beauty was well known as far back in ancient times.
The Ravine boasts a number of unique features and provides a good opportunity t
o get to know more about the locals' unique life and culture. Jiuzhaigou covers the Shuzheng Valley, Rize Valley and Zechawa Valley that form a "Y" shape, in the Minshan Mountain Range. Inhabited by Tibetans, the nine villages and alpine lakes, affectionately called "Haizi", are like reflecting mirrors or crystal jade blocks inlaid in snow mountains and forests. At the end of Zechawa Valley is the Chang (Long) Lake and the end of Rize Valley are virgin forests. From south to north, both valleys stretch and meet at Nuorilang. The drop between the two valleys and Shuzheng Valley is over 1,000 meters, with 114 lakes lying downward in an echelon manner, on which are 17 waterfalls, 11 rip currents and 5 travertine beaches, formulating alpine lake clusters and travertine spots that are rarely seen in China and even in the world. The mountains, lakes, natural primeval forest, beautiful flowers and Tibetan customs all make Jiuzhaigou a fairyland.
Besides, each site and each image shows something more-the true essence, the spirit, and the magic of Jiuzhaigou, Jiuzhaigou¡¯s wonders inspire the country's top photographers and artists because the best of their work is here. Others express their feelings through words, and there are numerous quotes from writers or visitors. However, many others articulate this land that seems indescribable. As the saying goes, it is better to see once than hear a hundred times.
Convenient transportation made gaining access to Jiuzhaigou a great deal easier. The highlight of any trip to these areas are special performances laid on by the Tibetan and Qiang people which are also
a popular form of nightlife in Jiuzhaigou. I believe whether you are a frequent visitor or someone who simply enjoys beautiful places, the visit to Jiuzhaigou will be a perfect way to remember the unique sites and beauty of Jiuzhaigou in days to come.
Huanglong, which means Yellow Dragon Mountain, is a valley studded with spectacular multicolored limestone ponds in every imaginable shade of blue and green. Situated in the northwest of Sichuan Province and 128 km south of Jiuzhaigou, the Huanglong Valley is edged by snow-capped peaks and glaciers. An incredible bio-diversity of flora and fauna thrives here alongside spectacular limestone formations, waterfalls and hot springs. The area also has a population of endangered animals, including the giant panda and the Sichuan golden snub-nosed Monkey.
