The Tibetan-language Department of Tibet University can be traced back to a training class for Tibetan-language cadres in 1951 and it has a history of 53 years. In 1998, two majors, Tibetan literature and Tibetan history were approved to be master's degree award units.

Currently, there are over 1,000 students at the Tibetan-language Department of Tibet University and up to now, over 10,000 students have graduated from this department and serve at different walks of life
