Communications have returned to normal in a remote county of southwest China's Tibet, which was hit by avalanches and mudflows after days of rain and snow, local government sources said on Saturday.
The road to Zayu County of Nyingchi Prefecture was reopened Friday evening after being cut by avalanches and mudflows from Sunday to Thursday, stranding more than 30 vehicles and 120 passengers, said a Zayu county government official.
An 18-year-old young woman was killed last Wednesday by a sudden avalanche when she was digging caterpillar fungus with two other people on the Zayu road. The other two were rescued.
Zayu has witnessed more than 140 millimeters of rainfall since last Monday, more than half the county's monthly average for May, according to the official.
Another snowslide in Baxoi County, Qamdo Prefecture, also killed one person and injured another on Wednesday morning. Twelve villages in the county have been affected by snowfall and avalanches.
Zhang Qingli, secretary of the Tibetan committee of the Communist Party of China, has been directing rescue and relief work.
Located in southeastern Tibet, Zayu County borders India and Myanmar and has a population of 26,200, including 22,700 farmers and herders living in remote villages. More than 70 percent of the inhabitants are Tibetan
