Guge Kingdom ruins blessed with bright future in tourism

Time: 2009/11/24

With the development of tourism industry, the ruins of Guge Kingdom in Tsada County, Ngari Prefecture, west Tibet, have gained new vitality from its ancient culture and history.

An internal conflict in the Tubo Kingdom in the 10th century resulted in the founding of the Guge Kingdom. Over the next centuries, the new kingdom expanded continuously, and created the unique Guge culture characteristic of splendid achievement in architecture, painting and metal manufacturing.

According to statistics of the Tsada Government, the ruins of Guge Kingdom received 3,439 tourists from home and abroad in the past ten months of this year. Its remoteness, the mysterious "soil forest" (a kind of special geomorphology formed by water erosion) and the brilliant civilization combined to give an important play to the ruins in Tibet's tourism industry.

Herders in the area are the first to get benefits from the development of tourism in recent years. The Tsada Government has helped them establish 16 family hotels in the Zha Burang Village near the site of the ruins, and so far, figures show that they have earned 100,000 yuan RMB from receiving and catering for the visitors.

The government has decided to take more effective measures to turn tourism even more competitive, gradually becoming a leading industry in the whole area by converting the current operation mode of simple sightseeing into diversified trips including adventures and expeditions in the surroundings.

Furthermore, the Tibet regional government will grant 80 million yuan RMB for the upkeep of the ruins and for making it more attractive.

The Ngari Airport and 219 National Route are expected to open to traffic soon and Tsada's tourism industry will usher in a bright future.
