Landslide-blocked Sichuan-Tibet highway reopens to traffic

Time: 2012/7/1

Traffic resumed on the Sichuan-Tibet highway on Saturday, a week after it was blocked by a barrier lake formed by a landslide, rescuers said.

A landslide struck the highway, which links Tibet autonomous region and neighbouring Sichuan province, in Tibet's Markam county on Saturday afternoon, creating walls that soon held a lake of floodwater.

More than 600 soldiers have worked seven days to discharge water from the lake, which measured 150 meters in length, 60 meters in width and 30 meters in depth, said Chen Jun, head of the rescue team.

Chen said rescuers had also cleared a 30-meter section of the highway that was blocked by a landslide that occurred in Bomi County on Friday.

The Sichuan-Tibet highway, a pivotal route linking Tibet and Sichuan, is under rising risks of floods and landslides as the eastern Tibet region entered its annual rain season, officials said.
