Preparing new clothes for Tibetan New Year

Time: 2013/1/31

Villagers of Dokde Township of Lhasa are making new Tibetan robes for the coming Tibetan New Year which falls on Feb. 11, 2013, the first day of the Tibetan calendar.

Being a common clothing of Tibetans, the Tibetan robe is also a unique dressing code which makes them distinctive from other ethnic groups. It is a kind of straight line clothes with features such as loose, long sleeves, loose waist and the right collar overlapping the left one.

Not needing to be cut out specifically, Tibetan robe has sleeves longer than the arms and the robe length longer than the upper body. The well-decorated parts of Tibetan robes are the edgings, sleeves and lapels, with precious fur or silk piping embedded into the bottom of the clothes. The underwear is usually shirts made of white satin.
