Tibet-Nepal Overland Tour is still suspended for Foreign Travelers

Time: 2016/8/2

The rainy reason comes in Gyirong county from early June to late July, and there are at least 5 times heavy rains during this period. Each time makes the road broken off at least one day.

On 29th July 2016, due to the heavy rain near the border, there is a big landslide in Nepal side, about 15km to the border and 10km to Shapu. The landslide area is so large that it takes at least 1 hour to walk across there. The mud is as deep as an adult’s knee and a large number of rubble in it. Under the slope, it is a rushing river. According to the words from local construction team, they need a whole week to do a rush-repair.And the border is temporarily closed even to Chinese and Nepali travellers. Some travel agency already stopped their overland tour plan Tibet-Nepal for Chinese travellers til mid Aug.

That's also why the Gyirong port is still colsed to foreign travellers til now, though it was expected to open in June, 2016.

In this case, if you plan to travel from Lhasa to Kathmandu or Kathmandu to Lhasa by road in August as a foreigner, Chinayak suggest you make an adjustment in advance. Or choose Lhasa and E.B.C 8 days tour instead and fly to Kathmandu from Lhasa after the tour.
Chinayak will keep updating you the news about the border. More information, you can contact us at tripadvisor@chinayak.com
