Yao People

There are 28 ethnic minorities including Yao, Dong, Zhuang, and Miao Nationalities in Guilin. They enjoy rich local customs, and interesting social and marital conventions.

 

For example, when Yao people perform their traditional tambourine dance (also called Huangni Drum), their acts are elegant and drums are dexterously beaten. Dong people also have their colorful "Yueye" gathering that is quite joyful; as far as a social activity is concerned, Dayou Tea is very famous, and whenever a guest comes, he or she will be invited for a cup of tea out of the hospitality of the host. When dragon boat festival comes, all nationalities participate in the boat race, while songs are heard everywhere. After race, they also visit their relatives and friends at other villages by dragon boat to consolidate their kinship and friendship. During Lantern Festival, every family is happy and people celebrate it by performing dragon lanterns in Guilin City and dry grass dragon performers wandering about in the rural areas.
